Kai's Emergency Room Visit

At 1:30 this morning Kai woke up, and Nathan started to get up as he usually will get up if the baby wakes up in the middle of the night and try and change his diaper and soothe him. But, it was if my mother's intuition was in full swing as I sat up and said, "Something is wrong with the baby."

We both raced into his bedroom to hear him gasping for air. Nathan immediately started patting his back thinking he was choking. This only seemed to make Kai more in distress and as his nail beds started turning blue, Nathan told me to call 911. I caled 911 and within minutes the firetruck and about 7 fireman from the local firestation were in out house. They sat Nathan and Kai down on the couch and immediately gave Kai oxygen. They said his oxygen levels were really low and that we did the right thing by calling them. They said he wasn't choking on anything, but that he had an upper respiratory infection and that we should get him to the ER. They recommended that Kai and I travel in the ambulance so that they could keep their eye on him and keep oxygen on him. Nathan drove behind.

We got to the ER and Kai started waving and smiling at people. You could tell he was sick, but his little personality still pushed through. The doctor told us that he had croup and that all we could do is take walks in the damp air, (luckily it had been raining) and keep a cool mist humidifier in his room. They also told us to follow up with his pediatrician on Monday. We got home at about 5:00 A.M. and although exhausted, were pretty amped and could sleep right away. Needless to say, Kai slept with us.

There is nothing more terrifying than seeing your child not able to breathe. I am so glad that Nathan was here. He is my calm through the storm. Get better my little Kai Bear.
